The photograph database is the largest collection represented on the Heritage Burnaby website. It contains thousands of images depicting the growth and development of Burnaby from the late-1800s to the present. These images have been scanned and described by the City of Burnaby Archives to be accessible by subject, keyword, geographic area and/or proper name(s). To date, the majority of the images available online are those that have come to the City Archives via the Burnaby Historical Society.

Prior to the City establishing its civic archives in 2001, the Burnaby Historical Society operated a community archives and since the mid-1950s, gathered more than 5000 photographs. In 2007, the community collection was amalgamated with the civic collection and transferred to the City Archives where it is now being maintained and managed in concert with the municipal records collection. More images are being scanned and added to the database each day – eventually, all photographs from all city collections (Archives, Museum, Library and Heritage Planning Program) will be available for public search and reference.
